How Many CBD Gummies Should I Take For Sleep?
CBD gummies are pretty much all the rage these days. Most CBD brands have at least one offering available within their full product lineup.
As the CBD industry continues to expand, and becomes more mainstream, finding CBD will become more and more accessible, although, most people can walk to your local gas station and purchase a CBD product.
CBD oil gives many people a relaxed feeling on its own, it is one of the many benefits that people may receive when consuming CBD.
While CBD on its own may produce a sleepy or tired feeling, some brands add additional ingredients, like melatonin, to assist the CBD in pinpointing the medical condition that a consumer is looking to address, like sleep.
We will address the question of how many CBD gummies should I take for sleep, but first, it’s good to educate you a bit on what CBD actually is.
What is CBD
CBD stands for cannabidiol, which is one of the roughly 100 cannabinoids that are found within the cannabis plant.
The most popular cannabinoid that people are familiar with is THC. While CBD and THC are both cannabinoids, CBD does not give you a “high” feeling the way that THC does.
CBD works with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which was discovered in the mid-1990s. This system’s main function is to keep the body in a state of homeostasis.
While the debate surrounding the efficacy of CBD is whether it actually works or not, those that believe in CBD feel that it works in assisting the body’s naturally created endocannabinoids from breaking down, which in effect keeps these endocannabinoids working longer and harder at assisting the body in dealing with pain.
CBD Dosages
READ: CBD Dosages – How Much Should You Use?
You will not find any one-size-fits dosage of CBD. People come in all shapes and sizes, and our metabolisms break food down at different speeds. These facts alone make it difficult to give a universal answer for how much CBD is right for you.
When attempting to understand what amount of CBD is right for you, you need to understand your body’s unique qualities, like metabolism rate, height, weight, etc.
CBD brands also produce CBD gummies in different milligrams per piece, to which you may find that a 10mg gummy doesn’t produce the same feeling as a 25mg gummy.
While this may seem a bit daunting, figuring out the proper CBD dosage that will work for you isn’t impossible. It just may take a bit of trial and error, however.
Prior to adding CBD to your regimen, you should speak with your doctor to make sure you won’t have a drug interaction if you also take medicine.

Body Weight
You should consider your weight while taking CBD. Someone that weighs 200lbs will most likely require more CBD than someone who weighs 130lbs. This is also so when it comes to taking some medications, and while CBD isn’t medicine and isn’t approved by the FDA to be considered a supplement, you should view the consumption of CBD in similar terms.
While there is no set ratio of weight to CBD milligrams, a common ratio is taking between .15-.30mg CBD per pound of body weight.
Metabolism
We all have a different metabolism rate, and as we age our metabolism slows down a bit. What may have worked for you five years ago may not be how your body breaks down what you consume currently.
If you know your body pretty well then this insight into how quickly your body is able to break down food and such will assist you in learning whether CBD will show its effects in a short or somewhat longer period of time.
It’s always good to consume CBD with food in your belly, preferably Omega-3 fatty acid types of food. Fat soaks up CBD and instead of consuming unhealthy fat for your body to process CBD, it’s good to have healthy fats doing all of the work.
Body Tolerance
As mentioned, CBD will not affect everyone in the same way. While some can tolerate a high dose, and actually require a higher dose to feel some effects, others do not.
Moreover, when you are new to CBD, you might feel more effects, as your body is processing something that it hasn’t before, which in turn may give you a feeling you haven’t experienced. Some may need additional CBD gummies to achieve the desired outcome.
You should understand your body’s tolerance, and begin with a low dose, increasing it gradually as you see fit.
CBD Gummies vs. Other Sleep Aids
Whenever our sleep is disrupted we don’t feel like ourselves the next day. Sadly, most of us have experience with this type of scenario.
Many may reach for a more traditional over-the-counter sleep aid and some of these contain Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) which is an antihistamine. The more frequently you consume these types of OTC, the more it may take for you to find the rest you are seeking.
Some side effects that these types of medications provide may not be something that you are looking to experience, however.
While CBD may also give people some side effects when consuming CBD gummies, CBD is relatively safe and the side effects are pretty minimal.
Each gummy also comes in a fixed dosage so if you encounter any side effects, you can always cut a gummy in two to consume less CBD.
High-Quality CBD Gummies
All CBD is not created equal, and this is especially true with CBD gummies. Some brands do not have the end user in mind when they begin the process of developing their products.
While this isn’t the norm, and the majority of CBD brands believe in their product and want to provide the best experience possible for the consumer, some brands do not pay such close attention to the ingredients that they use, they go for taste alone.
This way of thinking can also trickle down to the quality of CBD that is used in making the product.
Here is a list of what to look for when searching for quality CBD gummies for sleep.
Third-Party Lab Testing
READ: Why Third-Party Lab Testing is Important
Third-party lab testing is when a brand sends samples from a batch of their products to have an independent lab test to ensure the soil didn’t contain heavy metals, and that the solvents used to extract the CBD were organic. These tests also provide a full profile of the cannabinoids and terpenes that are found within the CBD.
Certificate of Analysis
A Certificate of Analysis (COA) should always be easily accessible to the consumer. The COA is pretty much a document that gives the consumer insight into the third-party lab testing that was done and provides the brand, and consumer, with detailed info that also gives a thumbs up (or down) that the product is approved to consume.
Customer Reviews
It’s always smart to check a brand’s website to read reviews that previous consumers have left to give some insight into their thoughts on the products. If a brand doesn’t have that many reviews, or if previous consumers have left harsh comments, it may be smart to take your business elsewhere.
High-Quality Ingredients
Ingredients used to produce the product should be easy to say and read. Too many additives that sound like a science experiment may provide you with insight that unnatural ingredients were used to make the gummies. Always try to purchase from brands that use as many organic ingredients as possible, and this goes with organically grown hemp!
CBD Type
Depending on the CBD brand, CBD gummies may be offered in one of three types of CBD. You have CBD Isolates, Broad-spectrum CBD, and Full-spectrum CBD.
CBD Isolate is just pure CBD powder that has been extracted from the plant. Everything besides CBD is taken out so you have just pure standalone CBD.
Broad-spectrum CBD contains all of the additional cannabinoids and terpenes, however, the cannabinoid THC is taken out.
Full-spectrum CBD contains everything the cannabis plant contained with nothing taken out. You receive all the benefits of the cannabinoids and terpenes, and it gives you what is called the “entourage effect.”
How Many CBD Gummies Should I Take for Sleep?
As mentioned earlier, there is no one-size-fits-all dose when it comes to CBD gummies for sleep. You should take your individual qualities into consideration when determining what dosage works for you.
CBD gummies usually come in different potencies, ranging from 5mg to 50mg CBD per piece. It’s best to figure out what potency of CBD works for your body type, and then find a CBD gummies product that contains the dosage that is right for you.
Finding the right dosage of CBD gummies that works for you takes some patience, however, due to how good most gummies taste, it’s a fun process!
